koto prefabricates the ‘ilo playhouse’ using larch timber and recycled rubber

for their latest project, koto has designed the ‘ilo playhouse’ as a flexible, semi-open space for both children and adults alike. inspired by the simplicity of scandinavian log cabins, the concept brings a contemporary twist to the traditional wooden structures to create an elegant yet striking sculptural form. handmade in the UK, the playhouses are prefabricated, allowing them to be delivered either as a whole, or in panels ready to be installed onsite by fabricators.

the structure of the playhouse is designed by koto with three closed sides and one left open in order to retain a connection to the outside and blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor. inside, the space can be used for reading or playing and intends to stimulate kids’ imaginations and development. in addition to providing a beautiful, compact place, the project also has aspirations of sustainability, as the structures are handcrafted using locally sourced larch timber, recycled rubber flooring and all natural paints and finishes.

in essence, the philosophy behind the project is to create beautiful, unique and original spaces using high quality natural, sustainable materials, ensuring long lasting products that can be used for years to come. ‘each stage of the design and production process is carefully monitored, always respecting an eco-friendly and truly sustainable approach. named ilo, which translates from finnish to joy, ilo is a space for children and adults alike,’ comments zoe little – founder at koto.
